When the John Hancock Building was completed in Boston in
1976, it was entirely a wall of glass. The tallest building in the city, it
sits next to the Trinity Church. The architect, I. M. Pei, intended that the
church be reflected in the wall of the Hancock Tower. Hancock basically mirrors
Trinity Church.
Do you have a mirror you can experiment with? Draw a picture
and put a mirror next to it to ‘double’ the picture. Hold a mirror so you can
see around a corner. Figure out how to use two mirrors to see the back of your
head. Hold a mirror perpendicular to a piece of paper and try writing your
name. Look over a wall. And here is the oddest experiment. Hold the edge of a
mirror against a picture of your face (you need a decent-size picture for this)
so the edge runs from your forehead to your chin. Look in the reflection. Does
that look like you? The fact is, the two sides of your face are different. If
they were identical, it wouldn’t look like you!
